Suraj
Jagtiani, Scofield 6th grader and Jonathan Xu, Scofield 7th grader came in
first in their grades against twenty-nine of the Stamford school district's
strongest middle school math students who participated in a challenge-math
event on Saturday, January 31, at the Academy of Information Technology & Engineering,
Stamford’s interdistrict magnet high school. Rippowam eighth-grader Christian
Sye won the "Stamford 2009 Top Middle School Mathlete" award, with
Scofield’s Jonathan Xu placing second, while Scofield’s Ben Paz
took the second place for 8th grade competitors Scofield had 11 competitors
at the event, which was Stamford’s run-off event for qualifying other
students to participate in the Southwest Connecticut Mathcounts competition.
Scofield’s sixth graders showed a particularly strong performance-- many
of them scored higher than 7th and 8th grade students from other Stamford middle
schools! Suraj took 6th place in overall ranking, which is remarkable for a
sixth grader competing against 8th and 7th graders. Congratulations to all
of our Scofield competitors, who spent their Saturday honing their math skills.:
