Dr. Shawn Marinello - Principal
Dr. Shawn Marinello began his tenure with Stamford Public Schools as a school counselor at Turn of River Middle
School. He was named Administrative Intern at Toquam Magnet Elementary School in 2014, became Toquam’s
Assistant Principal in 2017, and was named principal at Northeast Elementary School in 2018. Dr. Marinello began
his career as a third grade teacher at St. Mary’s Episcopal Day School in Tampa, FL, and later worked for Rampello
Downtown Partnership School in Tampa as Afterschool Director, Magnet Lead/Magnet Curriculum Integration
Teacher, and K-8 School Counselor. Dr. Marinello was also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Tampa from
2010-13, and currently teaches a class at Fairfield University. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary
Education from the University of Tampa, a Master of Arts in Educational Counseling from the University of South
Florida, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, Urban Education, from Nova Southeastern University. He has
professional certifications in School Counseling (CT 068) and K-12 Intermediate Administration or Supervision (CT
092).
Mrs. Jennifer Laughlin - Assistant Principal
Jennifer Laughlin joined Stamford Public Schools in 2008 as an English teacher at Westhill High School, a position she held until being named administrative intern at Turn of River Middle School in 2013. She served as TOR’s teacher leader for student support in 2020-21 and was an assistant principal at TOR from 2021 to 2024. Prior to joining SPS, Ms. Laughlin was an English language arts teacher at Harborside Middle School in Milford, CT and Elizabeth C. Adams Middle School in Guilford, CT. A graduate of Westhill High School, Ms. Laughlin earned a bachelor’s degree in communication sciences from the University of Connecticut, and both a master of science in education and a sixth year in educational administration and supervision from the University of Bridgeport. She is certified in Grades 7-12 English (CT 015) and Intermediate Administration and Supervision (CT 092).
Mrs. Sandy Schwoerer - Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
Sandra Schwoerer has been a TOSA for English learner professional development and coaching since 2022 and also was a TOSA for professional development/tiered support from 2019 to 2020. Schwoerer began her tenure with SPS as a teacher of English as a second language at Scofield Magnet Middle School from 2013 to 2019 and was a secondary literacy support specialist at Turn of River Middle School in 2021-22. Prior to joining SPS, she was an ESL instructor and specialist at the University of Connecticut American Language Program from 2008 to 2013. She began her career as a Peace Corps Volunteer teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) at a rural middle school in Thailand and facilitating teacher training for the Thai Ministry of Education. She also worked as an EL Teacher at James Monroe High School in the Bronx as a Peace Corps Fellow. Schwoerer has a bachelor’s degree in English from Fordham University, a masters in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) from Columbia University Teachers College, and a masters in curriculum and instruction from the University of Scranton. She is certified in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages PreK-12 (CT 111).
